LANDER STREET HOUSES
Lander Street Housing, located in Newburgh, New York, is a historic restoration of thirty-two 19th Century row houses into sixty-four affordable apartment units. By the mid 20th Century Newburgh had lost the commercial importance it had gained in the late 19th Century and began a long decline. With the influence of some of America’s finest architects of the 19th Century, Lander Street was historically one of Newburgh’s most beautiful neighborhoods, but it suffered severely from substantial abandonment during the 1980’s and 90’s.
In 1997 a regional not-for-profit corporation was formed to rebuild the area and impact the entire city. LMV coordinated the project team, which included: Rural Opportunities Inc., The Enterprise Foundation, Community Preservation Corporation, NYS Housing Trust Fund, NYS Division of Housing & Community Renewal, and the NYS Historic Preservation Office. The Lander Street Houses Historic Rehabilitation has been commended for its faithful effort and execution and recognized for its high level of preservation. The project has received several awards including: the 1999 Excellence in Historic Preservation by the Preservation League of New York State, the 2000 American Institute of Architects Community Design, and the 2002 New York State Historic Preservation Office Commendation.
