FOUNDERS CHAPEL – MOUNT SAINT MARY COLLEGE
The Founders Chapel at Mount St. Mary College is the primary chapel for student services on campus. Originally constructed in 1968, the Chapel’s space was austere with fixed side-facing pews, plain walls, and a low-slung ceiling. The college requested a more dynamic spatial design with increased student seating capacity while utilizing materials and finishes typical of Dominican churches; modern but historically rooted. Architecturally, the space was sculpted with sidewall piers and an open coffered ceiling constructed around the original metal trussed structure. To increase day lighting and take advantage of the Hudson River views, existing stained glass windows were supplemented with new clear windows. Removed stained glass was reconfigured into a new cross altar window with pocket lighting to accentuate the symbol to both the interior and exterior of the chapel. New terrazo flooring and standard pews were provided, increasing the capacity of the Chapel to 200 persons. The room, including rear aisle statuette apses, was trimmed with stained cherry molding. New HVAC and electrical systems were provided as well as theatrical lighting and multimedia systems.
